Iñaki Peña Approaches Contract Renewal with Barcelona Amid Goalkeeper Registration Crisis
Wednesday 06-08-2025
Iñaki Peña, Barcelona's goalkeeper, is in a mysterious situation within the Catalan club that may unexpectedly end with a contract renewal. The debate about Peña's future continues after Barcelona signed Juan García from Espanyol to be the first-choice goalkeeper and renewed Wojciech Szczęsny's contract, alongside Marc-André ter Stegen's long absence due to surgery.

Peña has received offers from local clubs and outside Spain, as he seeks to move to a team that guarantees him continuous participation. The Spanish newspaper "Sport" reported that Peña has known since last May that he might leave, but his transfer is linked to the registration of Juan García or Szczęsny in the team's roster, which is complicated due to the club's financial situation.

If Barcelona cannot register the goalkeepers before the start of La Liga on August 15, Peña will become the only available goalkeeper to participate, forcing him to play despite not being part of coach Hans Flick's plans.

Peña had negotiated an early contract termination with Barcelona to expedite his departure, but the club is currently considering extending his contract for an additional year. It is noted that Peña did not play a single minute during the recent Asian tour that Barcelona undertook in preparation for the new season.

Peña is 26 years old and conceded 25 goals in 23 matches he played with Barcelona last season across all competitions.
