Real Madrid has decided to officially promote its defender Raul Asensio to the first team, despite the weak performance he displayed in the 2025 Club World Cup, which was hosted by the United States.

Real Madrid participated in the new edition of the Club World Cup, which featured 32 teams, and exited the tournament in the semi-finals after a heavy loss to Paris Saint-Germain with a score of 4-0.

Raul Asensio was among the most disappointing players during the tournament, as he caused Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia to receive a penalty in the first round of the group stage, before being sent off in the second round against Pachuca, and missing the match against Salzburg in the third round. He also made a grave mistake in the semi-final match against Paris, which led to the first goal for the team.

Despite these mistakes, Real Madrid decided to reward the player by officially promoting him from the youth team to the first team, under the management of coach Xabi Alonso, according to the official La Liga website.

Asensio had been called up last season by former coach Carlo Ancelotti due to numerous injuries in the backline, giving him the opportunity to participate with the first team. Real Madrid is expected to announce his new jersey number later.
