Czesny Approaches Contract Renewal with Barcelona
Spanish newspaper 'Sport' revealed that Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is just steps away from renewing his contract with Barcelona, with an official announcement expected before the start of the pre-season on July 13 under coach Hans Flick.
According to the newspaper, Szczesny, who joined Barcelona last October to compensate for the injury of Marc-André ter Stegen, has reached a final agreement with the club for a new one-season contract with an option for an additional year. The delay in signing was due to the goalkeeper spending his vacation outside Barcelona, despite being informed of the club's plans and his technical position for the upcoming season.
'Sport' clarified that Flick informed Szczesny that he would be the second goalkeeper behind Juan Garcia, with the opportunity to participate in tournaments such as the Copa del Rey, depending on his performance during the preparation period.
Szczesny had decided to return from retirement to experience a new challenge with Barcelona last season and succeeded in gaining Flick's trust, having played 30 starting matches. The goalkeeper agreed to the club's offer to continue for an additional season after considering the idea of returning to retirement, but his decision came to stay and continue his journey with the Catalan team.
