Portuguese player João Cancelo, defender of Saudi club Al-Hilal, has stirred wide controversy in Mexican sports circles after a provocative statement he made before the match against Pachuca in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Cancelo stated in a media interview that he does not follow the Mexican or American leagues, adding: "I only watched the Monterrey match against Inter Milan, and I know that the opponent is very strong, but I do not follow the tournaments there."
The Mexican website “SDPNoticias” expressed its astonishment at Cancelo's words, considering that it is unbefitting for a professional player of Al-Hilal's caliber, especially with the crucial match against Pachuca approaching.
