Al-Karkh Defeats Al-Zawraa with a Brace and Gifts the League Title to Al-Shorta
Friday 20-06-2025
Al-Shorta Club has officially been crowned the champion of the Iraqi Stars League 2024-2025, marking their fourth consecutive title, after their direct rival Al-Zawraa suffered a painful defeat against Al-Karkh with a score of 2-1 in the match held on Friday evening at the Ahmed Radhi Stadium during the 36th round of the competition.

The match began with relative control by Al-Zawraa, who tried to maintain their slim hopes in the competition, and managed to score the first goal in the 14th minute through Murad Mohammed, following an organized attack that started from Moroccan defender Anwar Terkhat, who played a long ball towards the right side, reaching Sajad Mohammed, who in turn set it up inside the penalty area for Murad, who confidently shot it into the net.

However, Al-Karkh's response did not take long; in the 20th minute, professional player Izi Calvin scored the equalizer in a wonderful manner, following a remarkable run from the right side, dribbling past several defenders before unleashing a rocket shot to the left of the goalkeeper, gifting his team a fantastic goal that brought them back into the match.

The major blow that Al-Zawraa received came in the 30th minute, when the referee showed a direct red card to Yemeni defender Haroun Al-Zubaidi after reviewing the video technology, due to a handball close to the penalty area that halted a clear attack for Al-Karkh.

While Al-Zawraa tried to hold on with ten players, the final word belonged to Al-Karkh in the 87th minute, when player Musab Jamal managed to score the winning goal, after a run from the left side inside the penalty area and a precise shot that the goalkeeper could not save.

With this defeat, Al-Zawraa's points remain stagnant at 74, allowing Al-Shorta to officially secure the league title with 83 points without waiting for the remaining matches, confirming their dominance in Iraqi football in recent years, achieving their fourth consecutive championship, in a new historic achievement under the leadership of Egyptian coach Moamen Soliman.
