Erbil defeats Al-Student with a goal and achieves an important victory at home
Erbil Club succeeded in achieving a valuable victory over its guest Al-Student with a goal to nil, in the match that brought them together on Tuesday evening at the François Hariri Stadium, as part of the 34th round of the Iraqi Stars League.
The match started at a balanced pace, where Al-Student tried to impose its control through its usual collective style, benefiting from the vitality of its players in the midfield, while Erbil played defensively, relying on counter-attacks to achieve a positive result after a series of setbacks in the past weeks.
Throughout the first half, both teams exchanged some attempts without any real threat, amidst the brilliance of the defense lines and the goalkeepers, ending the first 45 minutes in a goalless draw, despite some opportunities that Al-Student nearly took advantage of to open the scoring.
In the second half, Erbil started in a more organized and aggressive manner, and the movements of Tunisian player Youssef Ben Souda posed a clear threat to the elegant defense, until the 73rd minute which witnessed the turning point in the match, after the referee awarded a penalty to Erbil following a foul inside the area.
Ben Souda himself stepped up to take the penalty and successfully placed the ball in Al-Student's net, announcing the only goal of the match.
After the goal, Al-Student tried to return to the match and attacked intensively, but Erbil's defense was solid and succeeded in closing down the spaces, while the hosts relied on counter-attacks that nearly added a second goal, were it not for the brilliance of the student goalkeeper.
With the final whistle, Erbil collected three important points, raising its tally to 44 points in tenth place, distancing itself further from the danger zones, and regaining some confidence after fluctuating results in recent times.
As for Al-Student, their tally remained frozen at 56 points in fourth place, suffering a setback in their struggle to get closer to the top three positions, despite the strong performance they delivered this season.
