Sources have revealed that Al Ahly club officials are placing Portuguese coach Jose Gomez, currently of Al Fateh in Saudi Arabia, at the top of the list of candidates to lead the team should Swiss coach Marcel Koller depart.

According to press reports, Gomez is leading the list of candidates to take over Al Ahly after the impressive results he has achieved with his Saudi team since taking on the role in the middle of the current season.

Reports indicate that Gomez has a clause in his contract with Al Fateh that allows for an extension for the next season with the agreement of both parties, which gives the Portuguese coach the freedom to leave.

This comes after the Portuguese welcomed the opportunity to lead Al Ahly at the Club World Cup next June, despite his strong results with the Saudi team.

Sources emphasized that Gomez's arrival to coach Al Ahly enjoys significant support within the club's board due to the coach's familiarity with Egyptian and African football.
