Interrogation of Piqué Due to Spanish Super Cup Case
Gerard Piqué, the former Barcelona defender, is being interrogated today, Friday, before a judge in Madrid as part of investigations into allegations of corruption and money laundering in the deal for Saudi Arabia to host the Spanish Super Cup.
The case dates back to 2019 when Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, made an agreement to move the tournament to Saudi Arabia for 10 years, in exchange for 40 million euros annually. Investigations revealed that the sports entertainment company Kosmos, owned by Piqué, received an annual commission of 4 million euros, even as the player continued to participate in the tournament with Barcelona at that time.
The Spanish prosecution opened an investigation into the deal in 2022, following the leak of an audio recording between Piqué and Rubiales revealing details about the commissions. Both Piqué and Rubiales have denied any legal wrongdoing.
As of now, the case remains under investigation, with the judge having the option to either dismiss it or refer it for trial. It is worth noting that Rubiales was convicted last month in a separate case related to the sexual assault of player Jennifer Hermoso during the 2023 Women's World Cup final.
