Barcelona Explores New Goalkeeping Options

Barcelona faces a strategic decision regarding the goalkeeping position, either by signing a top-class goalkeeper or by trusting a young talent from La Masia Academy, in order to ensure stability in this position in the long term.

Although signing a new goalkeeper is not an immediate priority, given the expected return of Marc-André ter Stegen in May or June, and the presence of Iñaki Peña with a contract extended for another season, in addition to the possibility of extending Wojciech Szczęsny's contract, the club has started evaluating its options to strengthen this position. The decline in Peña's performance and his loss of the starting position, along with Szczęsny's age at 34, reinforces the need to take action in the near future.

According to 'Mundo Deportivo', Barcelona has set a number of criteria for selecting the new goalkeeper, including having strong shot-stopping skills, the ability to handle aerial balls, and the confidence to come off the line. It is also preferred that the goalkeeper is young to ensure longevity for several years, with a basic requirement that they be no shorter than 1.90 meters to ensure control of the penalty area. While proficiency in playing with the feet is not a priority, the ability to make saves and protect the goal is considered a crucial factor.

Among the names that have been on Barcelona's radar is Georgian goalkeeper Mamardashvili, who stands at 1.97 meters but has signed with Liverpool. On the other hand, Spanish goalkeeper Juan García, who is 1.91 meters tall, is one of the options available, as he possesses great potential that makes him a candidate to wear the Catalan team's jersey.

As the transfer window approaches, Barcelona's management will need to make a decisive choice to secure the future of the goalkeeping position, whether by signing a new goalkeeper or giving the opportunity to one of the academy's talents.
