Atletico Madrid Competes with Barcelona for Benfica Defender
Spanish media reports have stated that Diego Simeone, the head coach of Atletico Madrid, has requested the club's management to sign a new left-back during the summer transfer window of 2025, despite the good performance of Javier Galan in that position.
According to the "Diario Gol" website, Atletico Madrid has entered into a fierce competition with Barcelona to sign Alvaro Carerras, a player from Portuguese Benfica, who previously played for Real Madrid.
The report confirmed that the deal could be worth up to 50 million euros, which is the amount required to activate the player's release clause, potentially distancing Barcelona from the race due to the financial constraints they are facing.
Carerras joined Benfica in the summer of 2023 and quickly established himself in the starting lineup, having played 37 matches, scoring 3 goals and providing 5 assists. Although the market value of the 21-year-old player is estimated at 18 million euros, Benfica refuses to sell him for less than 50 million euros, which is the value of his release clause that extends until the summer of 2029.
It is worth mentioning that Manchester United retains the option to buy back Carerras for 20 million euros, after signing him in 2020 from Real Madrid before his subsequent transfer to Benfica, which could complicate negotiations for Atletico Madrid and Barcelona to acquire the player.
